Call for papers/presentations - 1st International Belgian Urbanisms Seminar
Call for doctoral students & alumni
MaHS/MaUSP has decided to complement the yearly World Urbanisms Seminars (at the end of June) with an annual Belgian Urbanisms Seminar (at the end of January). This 1st Belgian Urbanisms Seminar will take place from 29 until 31 January 2019, and will present MaHS/ MaUSP studios of the first semester based in Belgium. The North Quarter 2.0, the Concepts & Analysis Studio, is focusing on the development of urban tissues, dwelling typologies and inclusive ownership models that reflect 21st century living in metropolitan Brussels. It does this on a site where a lot of past and present discourse converges. The Urbanism Studio University City / City University focuses on Leuven and the creation of a new intertwining of programs that catalyzes a radical shift in terms of mobility, density and inclusivity. The studio challenges one of the last and generally unquestioned reserves of zoning, namely (exclusionary and mono-functional) university campuses.
In the mornings of the two reviews and 31 January, we intend to have doctoral research and alumni presentations which focus on Belgian (Lowland) Urbanisms. Together, the studio reviews, doctoral and alumni presentations will trigger a lively debate on the current state of urbanism and evaluate (the role of) the design investigations and research that substantiates it. The intention is to underscore the diverse roles of urbanism in Belgium.
We warmly welcome propositions from doctoral students with research in the context of the Low Lands (Belgium/Netherlands/Luxemburg) and practiced-based proposals from alumni by the 10th of December 2018. Abstracts (300 words) should be accompanied with iconographic documentation. Notification of acceptance will be given on the 23rd of December 2018.

Forest & Water Urbanisms, Sonian Forest, Belgium: 2-14 September 2018
OSA co-led (with Metro Lab, UCL and Horizon +) an intensive design workshop in the Groenendaal Castel, centrally located in the Sonian Forest. The forest is simultaneously an essential ecological reserve and the main park of the Brussels Metropolitan Region. Design propositions were made for a vision of the territory (spanning the Brussels, Walloon and Flemish regions), which focused on new eye-opening propositions through the lenses of ecology, mobility and settlement. Fundamental restructuring of each and of their interplays is an urgent necessity. In addition to the territorial vision for the region where forest and settlement are inherently intertwined, 35 participants from 16 countries completed fieldwork and developed 4 zoom-in plans and a catalogue of ‘forest and water urbanisms’ tools for transformation. The workshop initiated a process that work across scales, stakeholders and agencies.
