Sybrand Tjallingii is an urban and regional planner with a background in landscape ecology. His PhD Thesis Ecological Conditions (TU Delft 1996) analyses the role of ecology in urban planning. He worked in teaching, research and consultancy at TU Delft and Alterra Wageningen and retired as an associate professor in 2006. Presently he is guest lecturer at TU Delft, IUAV Venezia and ULB Brussels. Research includes current projects with a focus on urban metabolism and the role of water in urban landscapes in Brussels and Antwerp.

One of the current projects is ‘revisiting Ecópolis’, assessing the experiences with this approach that originated in The Netherlands in the 80s and 90s. Key elements are a ‘working with nature perspective’ and looking from three viewpoints at integrated urban development: areas, flows and actors. Assessment focuses on three levels: street level projects, urban development and regional policy.
