The importance of public space for the quality of life within our cities is increasing worldwide. This is due to their decisive capacity to foster social balance within our increasingly complex societies and to improve our competitiveness in times of global concurrencies. At the same time our requirements onto public space are multiplied: mobility, comfort of use, security, multi-functionality, ecology and sustainability, history – just to mention some of the themes arising – superimpose with technical questions and clichés about cities and nature, real necessities and projected desires for representativeness and cosiness. Of course, all this shouldn’t cost too much as well … The lecture will show some of the recent projects of Latz + Partners from close by and far away, which are working within this suspense-packed field of preservation, renewal, expansion and development, and herewith demonstrate and discuss some of the themes of our times – water, garbage, traffic, leisure, social cohesion and participation.
